"If you ever find you're getting ahead of yourself, come along to RMH for a couple of days and watch what goes on. You will very quickly get a sense of what really matters and is important in life."

Since becoming a volunteer in 2015  for Ronald McDonald House Hobart, Greg Saunders (Sheep) relays these words onto anyone who asks him about volunteering.

Sheep is an extremely passionate volunteer that is always happy to lend a helping hand where needed. His inspiration comes from his own personal story of when his son was ill and his family needed support.

“Our son was really ill back in 1980 and there was no Ronald McDonald House to help us. “

Sheeps son needed treatment at the children’s hospital and needed to move around different hotels to stay close.

“He was there for sometime and I remember how hard it was to find somewhere that was close enough to him.”

Like any family, Sheep’s was stressed mentally, physically and financially. But pushed on to help his son when he needed him the most.

From his own experience, he wants to ensure that no other family has to go without support and jump from hotel to hotel just to be near their child.

By paying it forward through his volunteer work, Sheep helps keep our door open for families just like his, that need a place to be a family while their child is recovering.

“I volunteer for the best organisation and love making families smile when I’m in.”

Sheep’s dedication to help families is something all of our staff admire, and the families love seeing him around the house while he’s on shift.

“Talking to families who are stressed is one of the things I love about volunteering, because at least I can take their mind off things for a while.”

Sheep has been volunteering with us for 5 years now and we are beyond thankful for the energy he brings into the House. From overnight shifts to handy man work on Fridays, Sheep goes above and beyond for families with a seriously ill or injured child. Families and staff are delighted to have Sheep around and we are so thankful to have him get around our events such as the 2021 Tasmanian Gala Ball.

Thank you for being a valuable member of our RMHC volunteer family Sheep!
